Guide to Common Fault Analysis and Troubleshooting for Ultrasonic Flowmeters
Ultrasonic flowmeters are widely used in industrial measurement, but due to factors such as installation, medium, and environment, various faults often occur. This article analyzes five typical fault phenomena one by one, from causes to handling, to help technicians quickly locate and solve problems.
1. Large Instantaneous Flow Fluctuations
Fault Phenomenon
The instantaneous flow display value of the ultrasonic flowmeter fluctuates greatly and cannot be read stably.
Fault Causes
- Large signal strength fluctuations, leading to unstable measurement.
- The fluid itself has large working condition fluctuations, such as frequent pump and valve starts and stops.
Fault Handling
- Adjust the probe position to improve signal strength.
- Re-select the installation location to ensure it meets the straight pipe section working condition requirements of 10D upstream and 5D downstream.
2. Low Signal Strength of Clamp-on Ultrasonic Flowmeter
Fault Phenomenon
The signal strength of the clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeter is significantly low, affecting measurement accuracy.
Fault Causes
- The pipe diameter is too large, causing severe signal attenuation.
- The inner wall of the pipe is severely scaled, hindering ultrasonic propagation.
Fault Handling
It is recommended to technically modify to insertion-type probes. After the modification, the flowmeter display returns to normal.
3. Decreased Signal Strength of Insertion-type Ultrasonic Flowmeter
Fault Phenomenon
After a period of use, the signal strength of the insertion-type ultrasonic flowmeter gradually decreases.
Fault Causes
- The probe is offset, causing a change in the alignment angle.
- The probe emission surface is scaled, affecting signal transmission and reception.
Fault Handling
- Re-adjust the probe position to ensure alignment.
- Clean the probe emission surface to remove scale.
4. No Display When Ultrasonic Flowmeter is Powered On
Fault Phenomenon
The instrument shows no display after power-on and cannot work normally.
Fault Causes
- The power supply characteristics do not match the instrument rating.
- The fuse is blown.
Fault Handling
- Check whether the power supply characteristics are consistent with the instrument rating.
- If the fuse is blown, replace it with a fuse of the same specification.
5. Unusable Under Strong On-site Interference
Fault Phenomenon
The ultrasonic flowmeter cannot be used normally in a strong on-site interference environment, with abnormal display or crashes.
Fault Causes
- The power supply voltage fluctuation range is large.
- There is interference from a frequency converter or strong magnetic field nearby.
- Poor grounding.
Fault Handling
- Provide a stable power supply for the instrument.
- Install the instrument away from strong magnetic field interference sources such as frequency converters.
- Properly set up the grounding wire.
- Use shielded cables for ultrasonic lines, and lay power cables separately.
- Install a magnetic ring isolation transformer at the power input.
