Product Overview
Sludge Flowmeter 4W3B is an intelligent electromagnetic flowmeter based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, specifically designed for measuring the volumetric flow of conductive liquids such as sludge and slurry. Its RS485 communication interface supports the Modbus protocol, making it easy to integrate into PLC, DCS, and other control systems for remote monitoring. This article is based on the official Chinese manual RS485 version, extracting key operation and configuration points.

Technical Parameters and Selection
Main Performance Indicators
| Parameter | Typical Value |
|---|---|
| Diameter Range | DN10~DN2000 |
| Accuracy Class | ±0.5% |
| Medium Conductivity | ≥5μS/cm |
| Working Pressure | ≤1.6MPa (high pressure customizable) |
| Medium Temperature | -20℃~+120℃ |
| Output Signal | 4-20mA / Pulse / RS485 |
| Power Supply | 220VAC or 24VDC |
Selection Notes
- Select the appropriate range based on the sludge flow rate (recommended 1~5m/s) and pipe diameter.
- Confirm that the medium conductivity is not less than 5μS/cm; otherwise, special electrodes are required.
- For RS485 communication, choose a model with Modbus RTU protocol.
Installation Steps and Requirements
Installation Location Selection
- Avoid installation at the highest point of the pipeline or locations prone to gas accumulation.
- Ensure the upstream straight pipe section is ≥5D and the downstream straight pipe section is ≥3D (D is the inner diameter of the pipe).
- Sludge tends to settle; horizontal installation with the electrode axis horizontal is recommended.
Electrical Connection Steps
- Disconnect the power supply and open the converter wiring compartment cover.
- Connect the power lines (L/N or 24V+/24V-) according to the terminal markings.
- Connect the RS485 signal lines: A to A, B to B, and ground the shield at one end.
- If using 4-20mA output, connect the corresponding terminals and ensure the load resistance is ≤500Ω.
- Tighten the cable gland, restore the compartment cover, and confirm the seal.
RS485 Communication Configuration

Common Register Addresses
- Instantaneous Flow: 40001 (holding register, unit 0.01m³/h)
- Total Flow: 40003 (double word, unit 0.1m³)
- Device Address: 40101 (modifiable 1~247)

Note: After modifying communication parameters, power cycle or send a restart command to take effect.
Common Issues and Maintenance
Troubleshooting
- No flow display: Check medium conductivity, whether electrodes are contaminated, and whether empty pipe alarm is triggered.
- RS485 communication failure: Confirm A/B wiring order, consistent baud rate, and matching terminal resistance.
- Large measurement fluctuation: Ensure good grounding and keep away from strong electromagnetic interference sources.
Routine Maintenance
- Regularly clean the electrodes to prevent sludge adhesion from affecting accuracy.
- Check the converter's sealing to avoid water ingress and moisture.
- Calibrate zero point and range every six months.
