Sludge Flowmeter 4W5B Overview
Sludge Flowmeter 4W5B is an intelligent flow instrument based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, specially designed for measuring conductive media such as sludge and slurry. Its RS485 communication version supports the Modbus RTU protocol and can be easily integrated into PLC, DCS, and other control systems. This article provides a complete Chinese manual download and extracts key technical and operational points.

RS485 Communication Configuration and Wiring
Default Communication Parameters
- Baud Rate: 9600 bps
- Data Bits: 8 bits
- Stop Bits: 1 bit
- Parity: None
- Protocol: Modbus RTU
- Slave Address: 1 (modifiable)
Wiring Steps
- Confirm that the flowmeter power supply is disconnected to ensure safe operation.
- Open the wiring compartment cover and locate the RS485 terminals (usually marked A and B).
- Connect the positive pole of the shielded twisted pair to A (+), the negative pole to B (-), and ground the shield at one end.
- When networking multiple devices, use hand-in-hand daisy chain connection and avoid star topology.
- Connect a 120Ω terminating resistor at the end of the bus to eliminate signal reflection.
- After power-on, send Modbus commands through the host computer to test whether communication is normal.
Installation and Commissioning Points
- Installation Position: Ensure the pipeline is full of medium and avoid installation at the highest point of the pipeline or locations prone to bubbles.
- Straight Pipe Section Requirements: Upstream ≥5D, downstream ≥3D (D is the inner diameter of the pipeline).
- Grounding: The flowmeter must be reliably grounded, with grounding resistance <10Ω, to reduce interference.
- Commissioning: After power-on, check the zero point to ensure the output is 4mA when the pipe is full and there is no flow.
Common Problems and Solutions
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No flow signal | Medium conductivity too low or empty pipe | Check medium conductivity and ensure the pipe is full |
| RS485 communication failure | Reversed wiring, address conflict, baud rate mismatch | Check A/B line sequence and verify slave address and baud rate |
| Measurement value fluctuates greatly | Poor grounding or interference | Improve grounding and stay away from interference sources such as inverters |
| Zero point drift | Pipeline not full or electrode contamination | Fill with medium and clean the electrodes |
