Core Technology and Working Principle

80 GHz Radar Measurement Principle

VEGAPULS C 11 transmits 80 GHz frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) through the antenna, receives the echo reflected from the material surface, and calculates the distance based on the frequency difference. High-frequency signals have a narrower beam angle, which can effectively avoid interference from obstacles inside the tank.

  • Non-contact measurement: Does not directly contact the medium, suitable for corrosive, viscous, or high-hygiene requirements.
  • Small beam angle: Typical beam angle is only , allowing more flexible installation positions.
  • Strong anti-interference: Strong adaptability to steam, dust, condensation, and other working conditions.

Installation and Commissioning Points

Installation Position Selection

  1. Keep as far away as possible from the inlet and agitator to avoid false echoes.
  2. The antenna should be perpendicular to the material surface to ensure the beam covers the target area.
  3. The height of the mounting nozzle should not exceed 1/2 of the antenna length to prevent interference echoes.

Commissioning Steps

  1. Connect the instrument via VEGA Tools App or HART handheld communicator.
  2. Set the empty tank height, full scale, and medium type.
  3. Perform false echo suppression and store the interference curve.
  4. Verify whether the output current matches the displayed value.

Common Questions and Precautions

  • When measuring solids, it is recommended to use a flanged version with an aiming device to align with the material pile angle.
  • If there is condensation inside the tank, appropriately reduce sensitivity or enable the condensation suppression function.
  • Bluetooth commissioning requires normal power supply to the instrument and the phone within 10 m.
  • Regularly check whether the antenna surface has scaling and clean it if necessary to avoid affecting the signal.
