Overview of Promag 10 Empty Pipe Detection Function

The Empty Pipe Detection (EPD) function of the Promag 10 electromagnetic flowmeter is used to monitor whether the measuring tube is completely full. This function can effectively identify empty pipe or partially filled conditions and avoid incorrect measurement. Correct setup and adjustment of EPD are essential to ensure reliable operation of the flowmeter.

Activation Conditions and Default State

The Empty Pipe Detection option ON is not visible unless the flowmeter sensor is equipped with an EPD electrode. At the factory, this function is set to OFF by default and can be manually turned on if needed. The factory calibration water conductivity is 500 μS/cm. If the fluid conductivity deviates too much from this value, it is recommended to perform empty pipe and full pipe adjustment on site.

Adjustment Operation Instructions

After activating the ON option, a valid adjustment coefficient can be obtained. During the adjustment process, the following situations should be noted:

  • ADJUSTMENT FULL=EMPTY: The values for empty pipe and full pipe adjustment are the same, indicating that the adjustment may be invalid.
  • ADJUSTMENT NOT OK: Adjustment cannot be performed because the fluid conductivity is outside the permissible range.

If the above errors occur, the empty pipe or full pipe adjustment must be repeated until successful.

EPD Process Errors and Responses

Error Alarms and Outputs

If the empty pipe and full pipe adjustments are incorrect, the corresponding error alarm will be displayed. EPD process errors can be output via the configuration status output. The default factory setting serves only as a prompt message and does not affect the output.

Response to Partially Filled Pipes

When the EPD function is turned on and responds to a partially filled or empty pipe, the display will show the EMPTY PIPE prompt message and zero flow. If the EPD function is not turned on, the measuring instrument may exhibit the following responses:

  • Fluctuating flow readings
  • Zero flow
  • Extremely high flow values

Therefore, it is recommended to enable the EPD function under working conditions where empty pipes or partial filling may occur, so as to ensure measurement accuracy.
